There are a LOT of really great scenes in How to Train Your Dragon 2 but this is the one that had the most impact on me and FOR GOOD REASON:

  • It’s such a sweet and genuine song first of all.
  • It’s sung, at first, by this HUGE masculine viking who spent the better part of the first movie being super cold and distant, leaving his emotions at bay. Now he’s allowing himself to open up and express his feelings and that’s totally okay woah!!
  • Along with that his movements around Valka are slow and gentle, allowing her to either reciprocate or walk away. He never grabs her or tries to shove her right back into their relationship. He’s aware of how much time has passed, of her guilt, so homie’s playin it cool.
  • But yeah, ultimately SHE’S the one who agrees to the dance and picks up the pace and it’s SO GOOD to see both figures treating each other with so much love and respect.
  • Even better is that both parties are ADULTS, the mom and dad figures of the film series. Adults get written out or ignored so often in children’s movies, either by being dead throughout the entirety of the series OR by only showing up at key moments. Both Valka and Stoic are essential to the film, as is their relationship and Valka’s reason for leaving.
  • Did I mention how sweet and genuine the song is? Damn near every romance song in a kid’s film is built up to some schmalty love anthem but HTTYD2 takes a quieter, more human approach.

This isn’t even touching on the little details Dreamworks’ adds to their facial expressions and their movements and gosh everything here works so wonderfully please watch How to Train Your Dragon 2

omg that kid totally just phased through his body i cant believe they let this go to the final cut thats so lazy. this film has a multi million dollar budget this is unacceptable how could the animators miss that

movie ruined

omg wow, I’m so disappointed in you Dreamworks. I thought you guys were professionals.

ya, lazy much? Honestly, I am disappoint.

This happens several times throughout the film, especially to the Jack Frost character. In one scene, we can see him clearly positioned between the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus…

But in the next shot, he’s gone completely!

This is just lazy animation! If Dreamworks thought that we won’t notice, they were seriously kidding themselves.

And people wonder why I’m in the DreamWorks fandom.

reason #27375 why you shouldn’t watch rise of the guardians.

I mean, one of the main characters didn’t have their voice actor in the credits!!!

Whoever voiced Sandy, I am so, so sorry.

I love how Hiccup’s trying to talk serious while Astrid’s like, meh….

You know what I reeeeeeally love about this scene?

The details in the animation in how realistic the movements are.

Hiccup’s all worked up, flinging his arms around (like really how does he not notice that he does that all the time?) and he ends up bumping one of his arms into Astrid’s, and then she reacts and looks over at him. She (probably) knew that was an accident but it’s just such a natural reaction.

The fact that they even animated that little gesture is just awesome, cause it’s stuff that really happens. When I start using broad arm and hand gestures sometimes you will hit the other person next to you unintentionally, and they’ll look over like “oh did you want something…oh nope…you just tapped me on accident”.

Nicely done.

Plus Astrid’s little belly breath. So cute.

I love how everyone in this fandom analyzes these scenes so much..
It truly changes my whole perspective of these types of scenes..

It’s the little things

It’s definitely the little things that made me love this franchise more and more. Haha Of course all thanks to the fandom who catches and shares these awesome analysis.
